I am currently recruiting a postdoctoral researcher. The postdoc position can start as soon as January 2024. Recruiting is also currently open for undergraduates.
We are affiliated with the Department of Genetics and Biochemistry and the Center for Human Genetics at Clemson University. Our lab is located on Clemson University's campus in Clemson, SC, in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The university has an R1 research rating and excellent research resources, including the Palmetto supercomputer and computational cluster. The Department and the Center both have many opportunities for collaboration and training in a variety of skills. Clemson is a fun college town with a low cost of living and is surrounded by multiple lakes and state parks. The closest large city with an airport is Greenville, SC, which is just a 40 minute drive away. Within a two hour drive from campus, you can reach the beach, the Blue Ridge Mountains, and several large cities, including Atlanta GA, Charleston SC, and Charlotte NC.
Postdoctoral Researchers
I am currently looking for a postdoctoral researcher to assist in ongoing research projects in the lab. These projects involve analysis of low-coverage genomic data from ancient domesticated populations or the analysis of published human genome data for a variety of projects, including examining selection over time in ancient populations and archaic ancestry in modern humans (both genome-wide and focused on a specific gene). Successful candidates will be expected to analyze genomic data, prepare and collaborate on manuscripts, mentor graduate and undergraduate students as they join the lab, and assist with grant preparation. There will also be opportunities for postdocs to develop their own research projects and apply for grants.
This position comes with a salary following NIH pay scales, university benefits, and funding for research/conference travel. The position is funded for two years, with annual renewal, and a possibility of continuing the position pending funding availability. Experience with large genomic datasets and programming languages like Python or R are required. Experience with working on a computational cluster, population genomics methods, ancient DNA analyses, and demographic modeling simulation software like msprime or SLiM are a plus. I encourage candidates from diverse backgrounds, including anthropology, biology, and statistics, to apply!
If you are interested in this position, you may apply via Interfolio. You are also welcome to email me if you have any questions about the position. Review of applicants will begin October 30th and continue until a suitable candidate is found.
I am also happy to host individuals with independent funding in my lab - if you feel our interests align, please email me. I am happy to help develop any grant applications and provide suggestions for funding sources.
PhD Students
The graduate school application deadline for fall 2024 has now passed, and I will not be considering additional PhD program applicants for the moment.
Master's Students
I am currently open to hosting Master's students through the Department of Genetics and Biochemistry. Please email me to discuss potential projects before you are accepted to the program to ensure that the Witt Lab is a good fit for your interests and goals.
Undergraduates
Undergraduate students are welcome to join the lab and assist with the work we are doing! Our research is interdisciplinary, and so Clemson students from any major are welcome to join. Students will work closely with me and other lab members to analyze data as part of ongoing projects. This work will require some computational knowledge (such as computational cluster usage, R, etc.) although no experience is necessary and we will provide any training that is required. Students who are interested in pursuing an independent project may do so after a training period, although this kind of project would require an additional time commitment and internal motivation.
If you wish to apply to work in the lab, please email me with a brief statement about any past research experience and why you're interested in working with my lab.
